History of our School

It is said that this school, which was established in the year 1874, was first located on the premises of the church of Wennappuwa. The churches were then in charge of the Reverend Father Chunavel of the Immaculate Mary. At that time, this school was named Sinhala Girls’ School and it is said that there were 138 female students and 05 teachers.
The school education service was started by the priests of the Holy Family who joined the invitation given by Father Chunavel of the Immaculate Mary Order who laid the foundation for an educational background. In January 1885, Wennappuwa Sinhala Girls’ School, which had about 150 children, was handed over to the management of the sisters of the Holy Family and was founded by Sh. It is also said that the church of Juse Munidun was separated from the land and brought to the land of the convent where this school is currently located. Reverend John Aloysius (Retd) was in charge of the church at that time. According to the amount of money available, small pieces of land were bought in this area and the Vennappuwa Holy Family Convent and the necessary buildings for education were built with great dedication and under the guidance of the foreign Reverend Mothers. Various mission services were started with this according to the needs of the area. These nuns, especially in women’s education, pointed out the responsibility to live a life pleasing to God by preserving women’s dignity through education and various services. This school was named Sinhala Girls’ School from then on. By 1962, there was a Sinhala Kindergarten from 1-5 and a Sinhala Girls’ School from 6-11 and on 10-09-1962, both schools were taken over by the government.
Reverend Mary Prudencia was the first headmistress. During the time of the Honorable Holy Mother, i.e. English Girls’ Private School founded in 1929 and St. Mary’s Private School founded in 1956 were taken over by the government in January 1971, the children of the school founded in 1874 and the private schools that were taken over by the government in 1971 were brought together to form the Government Kanitu School. And it has been decided to run the school as two schools under the control of nuns according to the views of the parents named as Government Girls’ School.
According to the log entry dated 26-02-1976 No. Hala/Pasa/2/783 and letter dated 11-02-1976 of the Regional Director of Education, Halawata, the name of this school has been approved to be used henceforth as Hala/Vennappuwa Shuddavu Family Kanitu Girls’ School. .Starting with 138 female students then, till now 913 female students have been provided educational opportunities by the leadership of the Sisters of the Holy Family. According to the education reforms, the number of students who should be in a primary class was 40 in 2016 and has gradually been limited to 35 by 2021. Therefore, our school, which belonged to the category of schools with more than 1000, will belong to the category of schools with less than 1000 from the year 2018. In order to provide a suitable environment for students to learn from grade 6, the principal is making efforts through the contribution of parents and the community.
What we see up to the present was planned under the leadership of the nuns of the Holy Family. Shu. Let’s remember the Pavdi sisters of the family. Let’s gratefully remember all those who helped them and made sacrifices for a glorious history and all those who are still working on it.
